The year 2023 is to see the release of no less than two Italian movies dedicated to as many gold medals for military valor. Is this good news? A sign that Italy is starting to pay tribute to its heroes again, to celebrate patriotism and military virtue?
Technology, without the man who knows and is motivated to employ it, is useless. You can acquire the most sophisticated warfare technologies, but if you do not have the proper personnel, it is money wasted. The human factor is more essential than ever in the Army, where the combatant himself becomes a weapon system.
For months there has been debate in Europe around the shortcomings that have emerged in the Russian military apparatus. But no European and perhaps Western armed forces today would seem capable of sustaining such a conventional conflict militarily or even politically and socially.
The Russian-Ukrainian war is the first conventional conflict fought on a large scale in Europe since 1945. A type of conflict that even the largest European NATO armies could not sustain. More men, means and ammunition are needed.
Italy must decide whether to play the international game and whether to do so in the premier league or in a lower division. This definition of strategic goals is up to politics; the military just has to implement them.
Sovereignty protection; system-building capabilities; energy strategies consistent with its economic complexes; integration between defense and foreign policy systems. These are just the main examples with respect to the challenges to be faced head-on in the near future.
As the world was moving toward instability and conflict, Italy neglected its Armed Forces. Now the mistakes must be remedied and Italy must be equipped with a military instrument that makes this country strong and respected in the world. Focusing on: tools, personnel, specificity of individual branches, and financial planning.
