It has taken only a short time to erase the tragedy of the Holocaust from the memory of some, to make the word pogrom relevant again in circles that all too often seek only an enemy to hate, some doing so without knowing the history, others trying to undo it.
Forgetting the images of Jews fleeing extermination camps, the sight of bodies piled up in mass graves, the horror of trains loaded with deportees, shows us how the cult of Remembrance becomes evanescent for those who profess inclusiveness and tolerance, but who bring back Jew-hunting and a dastardly anti-Semitism.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has generated different reactions in the world with respect to the dynamics that are fluidly evolving, the battlefronts for the State of Israel have widened, and the war triggered by the attack of 7 October 2023 now holds the entire world in suspense, with implications that are also affecting our country.
The reactions in Italy to the conflict, however, leave one deeply perplexed, the Palestinian cause becoming a flag behind which to carry out acts of violence during events that claim to be peaceful.
The demonstrators in support of the Palestinian struggle, who are part of Italian left-wing circles, have taken on a supportive attitude towards the Hamas attack on 7 October, and not only that, clear expressions of anti-Semitism have appeared in Milan, through placards with images of the senator for life Liliana Segre referred to as a ‘Zionist’, along with other figures from politics, business, and newspapers.
Always on the wrong side.
Unfortunately, we have witnessed violence in the streets very often, the motivations of the marches that have been violent are different but they have only one real objective, that of devastating cities and striking the forces of law and order. The city of Turin was put to the sword in March 2023 to demonstrate against 41 bis and for the liberation of Cospito, then again in Turin in October 2023 marches organised against the government degenerated into violence, the real victims of these demonstrations are the police and citizens.
On 5 October in Rome in the demonstration organised by the Pro-pal groups, there were real organised attacks against the forces of law and order, some of the demonstrators targeted the officers on duty for public order, injuring at least thirty of them.
Slogans also appeared that hailed the cowardly terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel, without taking into account the Palestinian reality under the control of Hamas and its guerrilla strategies, to the point of turning Palestinians into human shields.
The day after these events was marked by the silence and lack of condemnation on the part of the Italian left, which, combined with the silence of the red feminist circles on the rapes of Israeli women, is a clear example of how, for a large part of this political area, it is more important to seek consensus in any context than to think about the protection of rights and peace, moving deeply away from their founding values.
The drama of the Palestinian people is a truth that is not denied by any political area, the search for peace is certainly the way forward for the protection of the lives of the conflicting parties.
The strange combination on the left: anti-Semites and pro-Hamas.
The anti-Semitism bubbling up from the left does not sufficiently outrage the leadership of the Democratic Party, some take feeble positions, others do not speak out, but there are even those who minimise the violence of the protesters by harming public safety.
The indignation of the left, however, when it comes to the battles against the interests of Italians, is always vigorous.
It is against those who, like Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, fight to safeguard our country's borders and work with the government to limit the flow of illegal immigration. It is vehement against those who oppose the Ius Scholae by trying to protect the very rights of Italian citizens. It is also vehement against those who strenuously try to keep gender or queer theories out of schools to protect children from ideological instrumentalisation, such as MP Rossano Sasso, making him the subject of dissenting slogans.
In any case, there is a privileged cry for alarm at the alleged return of fascism, while behind the scenes the masses are agitating for demonstrations supporting a massacre that took place with immeasurable ferocity and cruelty by terrorists, hatred against Jews and against the forces of law and order is being fuelled.
It remains incomprehensible how the political area that was born out of Marxism and after the Second World War became the bulwark of equality, equal rights, social protection, and the condemnation of anti-Semitism, can today support the murders, rapes, torture, and violence carried out by Hamas, linking itself to environments that in the name of religious extremism restrict personal freedom, freedom of speech, press, and expression, and that take women back to the Middle Ages with respect to their emancipation.
